January 2012
Editor’s Note

Entering a brand-new year is exciting, but often unsettling. We’re faced with the all-too-familiar challenges of sluggish market conditions and slashed budgets, with an ever-increasing demand by clients to do “more for less”. The market is punishing. There’s little room for missteps. All the more that corporates, large or small, zealously guard their reputations.

The article on the Woolies/Frankies saga is a must-read. It reminds us how a clumsy response to a crisis can blemish the hard-earned reputation of even our most admired companies. I hope this and other contributions will stimulate discussion and debate, and help put all the bewildering change in perspective. Understanding trends will enable us to “connect all the dots” so that we can plan and thrive in the future. We look forward to your valuable feedback, so be sure to drop me a line.

Let me leave you with a challenge by Seth Godin (from his book “Poke the Box”): “We have little choice, but to move beyond quality and seek remarkable, connected and new.”

Enjoy the journey in 2012!

With the Euro debt crisis still in full swing, dark warnings from the likes of International Monetary Fund managing director Christine Lagarde that we may yet find ourselves in a second Great Depression, and Japan’s economic crisis threatening to dwarf the European one, the world’s dire economic situation is by no means going away.
