The Sage of Omaha, Warren Buffett, sounds this dire warning: “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.

And even more so in the age of social media.

The big question is – are you ready for your next reputational crisis?

Incredulously, many corporate titans often try to wing it, with disastrous consequences. A recent case in point is BlackBerry maker RIM, now a shadow of its former self and fighting for its survival in the punishing marketplace. Those who zealously guard their reputation – such as Apple under the visionary stewardship of Steve Jobs – have benefited immensely. Apple is now reported to be more valuable (in terms of equity) than both Google and Microsoft combined!

If your company is not prepared to weather a potential reputation storm, it’s time for bold action. If not, you could pay a heavy price.
