Brothers for life statement

Brothers for Life, a leading South African campaign targeting men, strongly condemns the recent brutal gang rape and sexual assault of a 17-year-old Soweto school girl by seven men, which was filmed and went viral, says programme manager, Mandla Ndlovu.

“This dastardly act is outrageous and despicable and should serve as a warning to perpetrators that such actions will not go unpunished.
“It is an indictment of our new democracy where a woman is raped every 17 seconds,” adds Ndlovu. “We should not tolerate the status quo where a woman born in South Africa has a higher chance of being raped than learning how to read.”

“It is time for men all over South Africa to take a firm stand against this scourge. Our women should be treasured and respected!”
Launched in 2009 in KwaMashu, the Brothers for Life campaign aims to address the risks associated with having multiple and concurrent partnerships, sex and alcohol, gender-based violence and promotes HIV testing, male involvement in PMTCT and health seeking behaviours in general.
